The Oakland City Council’s recent decision to freeze a city arts position in the next budget cycle has prompted criticism from advocates who say it threatens already limited cultural arts funding. At a June 11 meeting, a group of councilmembers proposed amendments to the then-Interim Mayor Kevin Jenkin’s draft 2025-2027 budget that eliminated funding for the Cultural Affairs Manager role within the Economic and Workforce Development Department.

New federal conditions on funding from the National Institutes of Health, or NIH, now require grant recipients to certify they do not promote certain forms of diversity, equity and inclusion, or DEI — a shift which is already delaying the release of grant awards at UC Berkeley. The change, announced in an April 21 policy update, applies to all new, renewal, supplemental and continuation awards.

UC Berkeley officials confirmed they plan to demolish three landmarked buildings of the historic Anna Head School in an effort to meet the 2017 campus housing goal of doubling existing accommodations. Channing Hall, built in 1892, is among the structures slated for removal. The 133-year-old building is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places and recognized by Berkeley’s Landmarks Preservation Commission.

With ASUC elections approaching in April, ASUC leaders are ramping up efforts to increase voter turnout, an issue that has hindered past elections and prevented key measures from passing. Last spring, only 20% of students casted a vote. This year, the ASUC Elections Council has expanded polling locations, introduced new campus events and increased outreach to graduate students, aiming to boost engagement after years of low participation.

Photolab Berkeley was broken into when a car rammed through its front door entrance, causing significant damage but no major theft in the early morning of March 1, following a similar incident just next door. The break-in occurred at approximately 3 a.m., triggering an alarm, which prompted a response by the Berkeley Police Department, though the four break-in suspects had already left by the time officers arrived, according to Melissa Smith, the lab manager.
