A Vinayagar temple in front of a church, especially in the southern coast of Tamil Nadu where the entire fishermen community converted to Catholicism centuries ago, is a rare sight. The Siddhi Vinayagar Temple, facing Our Lady of Lourdes Church at Idinthakarai in Tirunelveli district, is only a few decades old. Behind it lies a tumultuous history that led to the reconversion of a significant section of the fishermen to Hinduism in the 1960s.

In 2011, during the run-up to the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) leader S. Ramadoss visited DMK leader M. Karunanidhi at his Gopalapuram residence to invite him for a family wedding. Karunanidhi did not miss the opportunity to rope the PMK into the DMK-led alliance, even though the PMK had contested the 2009 Lok Sabha elections as part of the AIADMK alliance.

With DMK president and Chief Minister M.K. Stalin recently visiting his elder brother M.K. Alagiri’s house in Madurai after over a decade, the latter’s supporters have requested the party leader to readmit them. Mr. Alagiri, the DMK’s former Madurai strongman and Union Minister, was expelled from the party by his father M. Karunanidhi over 10 years ago following a family feud. His supporters were also shown the door.

Archaeologist Amarnath Ramakrishna says he stands by his report on the excavations at the ancient site of Keezhadi in Sivaganga district. In his response to the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), which had requested that he rewrite and resubmit his report, Mr. Ramakrishna firmly defended his conclusions.
