The Hindu is a daily newspaper published in English in India. Based in Chennai, it originally started as a weekly publication in 1878 and transitioned to a daily format in 1889. As of December 2013, it ranks as the second most circulated English-language newspaper in the country, with average sales reaching 1.39 million copies. According to the 2014 Indian Readership Survey, it holds the position of the third most read English newspaper in India, following the Times of India and Hindustan Times, with a readership of about 1.6 million. The Hindu's largest circulation is in southern India, making it the most popular English daily in the states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
