    Republican Congressman John James last ran for a statewide office in 2020 in a bitter battle against U.S. Sen. Gary Peters, D-Bloomfield Township. James came very close to the finish line. James lost to Peters by less than a percentage point as Detroit voters chose the Democrat over the Black Republican, who has long associated himself with President Donald Trump. Now James is mounting another serious campaign, this time to become Michigan's governor in 2026.
