1 IntroductionIn the early days of oceanography, a widely used method to track ocean currents was through drifting bottles. A bottle containing an SOS, love letter, or scientific message, and possibly contact information and an identification number, would be thrown into the ocean, and, in the case of a scientific study, the time and location were recorded.
