To celebrate the beginning of our 20th year, we’ve set out to catalogue the contributions that Pittsburgh and western Pennsylvania have made to the world. The list has grown and grown, and despite our best efforts, we know we’ll leave out key contributors. I think you’ll find that this small city at the confluence of three rivers has played an astonishingly outsized role in the creation of this country and the world we inhabit.

It’s like no other place in the world because it exists in only one place — Blawnox. Walk into the just-opened Illustrious Order of Makesmiths and a wonderland of imagination explodes. To call it a store doesn’t do it justice — a gallery of curiosities is more accurate. Makesmiths is the vision of Squonk Opera co-founder Steve O’Hearn and his wife, Chief. Both are graduates of the Rhode Island School of Design who have been making “things” for decades.

John Tarallo is a happy person. And he seems to infuse his infectious enthusiasm and passion into everything he touches. Raised in Lawrenceville and Bloomfield, he started working at the legendary Groceria Italiana at 13. There, and in his Italian mother’s and grandmother’s kitchens, he watched and learned about food, flavors and cooking. He went on to work in restaurants, including as a pizzaiolo, or pizza-maker, at Piccolo Forno. For Tarallo, it has always been about flavor.
