To celebrate the beginning of our 20th year, we’ve set out to catalogue the contributions that Pittsburgh and western Pennsylvania have made to the world. The list has grown and grown, and despite our best efforts, we know we’ll leave out key contributors. I think you’ll find that this small city at the confluence of three rivers has played an astonishingly outsized role in the creation of this country and the world we inhabit.

If Punxsutawney Phil appears bleary-eyed when he emerges from his burrow to makehis weather prediction on Groundhog Day, it may be because the 139-year-old father ofyoung “twins” has a lot going on at home. As a fifth grader, Josiah Golojuh faced a dilemma. His teacher had assigned the class to write a descriptive essay about a family vacation, but Josiah hadn’t been on a vacation he thought was interesting. So, Josiah wrote about a fictional vacation that included far-fetched interactions with the supernatural. Josiah’s classmates voted his essay one of the best, and Josiah was hooked on writing fiction.

John George says he has more than a million vinyl records in stock at his record store in downtown Johnstown. But his business, George’s Song Shop, may be best known for a different kind of record. The shop is believed to hold the record as the oldest record store in America. George’s Song Shop was founded in 1932 by John George’s father, Eugene George, and his uncle, Bernie George. John’s Uncle Bernie sold his share of the business to John’s father in 1941.
