Late spring and better weather is enough to tempt the most dedicated couch potato out of doors and there are plenty upcoming attractions beckoning us to do just that. May is a lovely month, full of flowers and - fingers crossed - sunshine, bringing with it the feeling that summer is now in our sights. Here, we look ahead to what's in store for us in the North East during that month.

A County Durham entertainment hub which has showcased the local music scene for the past five years is launching a last-ditch bid this week to raise enough money to boost its future. The NE Volume Music Bar in Stockton has a crowd-funder campaign underway which has so far received a huge show of support after owners Lee and Adam Allcock said they faced the "heartbreaking reality" of having to close the venue if they could not raise enough money to cover spiralling costs and "keep it alive".

The soaring notes of I Will Always Love You will fill the mighty space of Durham Cathedral this summer during a unique music night. The city landmark, which runs a programme of events alongside its usual services, is t host a special tribute show in June called Whitney Houston by Candlelight.

Everybody loves festivals and as we embrace better spring weather at last, this April offers a pick of them, from food events to puppets and scarecrows. There is plenty on offer in the North East throughout the month to encourage us to make the most of being outdoors while there are indoor attractions too, including new exhibitions and visiting shows.

The popular Big North Tattoo Show will be making a comeback in Newcastle for a seventh year following huge local support over recent years which has organisers now saying 'it looks like it is here to stay!'. This May will mark the seventh outing of the convention which brings top-class tattoo artists together under one roof at Utilita Arena and advance tickets for it are currently on sale.
