Health care journalists should learn the proper reporting techniques before interviewing people who have experienced trauma, such as the sudden death of a loved one, medical malpractice or gun violence. Some of these techniques go against traditional journalism practice — for instance, allowing sources to review quotes — but they are important because the last thing journalists want to do is inflict emotional pain.

Researchers led by the Cleveland Clinic linked the low-calorie sugar substitute xylitol to an increased risk of heart attack, stroke or cardiovascular-related deaths, according to a study published today in the European Heart Journal. Xylitol is a sugar alcohol that is found in small amounts in fruit and vegetables, and the human body also produces it.

We freelancers can spend a lot of time crafting a pitch, and it’s helpful if we know what an editor wants from us. That’s why I am always on the lookout for additional publications to feature on the market guide section of AHCJ’s freelance center. In April and May, I spoke with editors from seven publications new to the AHCJ website and added these guides to the growing list. There are now 48 guides in all, and each one contains detailed advice from editors.
