2025 Jackson County Junior Fair Queen to be crowned Saturday

RIPLEY, W.Va. (WV News) - On Saturday, June 7, the 2024 Jackson County Junior Fair Queen, Natalie Donohew, will crown her successor in the Ripley High School auditorium. The pageant is set to begin at 6 p.m. with doors opening at 5:30 p.m. Admission is $5 for those five years old and over. Visiting royalty wearing their sash will be admitted for free. Over $4,500 in scholarships and prizes will be awarded. Eight young ladies will be vying for the title of 2025 Jackson County Junior Fair Queen.
Evans man enjoys running, participates in Boston Marathon

EVANS, W.Va. (WV News) – The 129th Boston Marathon took place on April 21, 2025. The event was a Platinum Label marathon, one of seven World Marathon Majors for 2025. This year, there was a local Jackson County tie; 31-year-old Jonathan Schiefer of Evans participated in the event. A 2012 graduate of Ravenswood High School, Schiefer is no stranger to running. “My dad was also a runner; he was in the military,” Schiefer said.
Skilled Trade Scholarship Program adds five more including two from Ripley High

RAVENSWOOD, W.Va. (WV News) – Constellium, along with WVU Parkersburg, hosted a signing celebration on Monday, June 2, welcoming five new students to the Skilled Trade Scholarship Program. For the sixth year in a row, the two facilities have partnered to offer the program, which gives students participating in mechanical and electrical studies, upon successful completion, a guaranteed job at Constellium following graduation from WVUP.
Ripley High students participate in Young Writers Day at UC

RIPLEY, W.Va. (WV News) – Two Ripley High students, Addison Fatla and Sadie Brier, recently participated in a Young Writers contest at both the county and state levels. Their participation led them to an invitation to attend Young Writers Day. Although housed at Marshall University, the contest is through the Central West Virginia Writing Project. Each year, Young Writers Day takes place at the University of Charleston (UC) for its centralized location in the state.

Ravenswood City Council hears request for opioid litigation funds

RAVENSWOOD, W.Va. (WV News) – Ripley Rotary Secretary, Steve Westfall, requested $10,000 of opioid litigation money for a program new to the county, Sleep in Heavenly Peace. A chapter of the national non-profit organization has been established with a fund at the Community Foundation of Jackson County. The program, whose motto is “No kid sleeps on the floor in our town,” provides handmade twin-size or bunk beds for children aged 3 to 17 in need.
Ravenswood High Class of 2025 set to graduate today

RAVENSWOOD, W.Va. (WV News) — Commencement exercises are today (Friday) for the Ravenswood High School Class of 2025. The graduation ceremony for 99 seniors is set to begin at 6 p.m. at Flinn Field in the Spano-Taylor Stadium. Cameron Rawson is the class valedictorian. He is the 18-year-old son of Kevin and Amanda Rawson. Following graduation, Cameron plans to attend West Virginia University, majoring in environmental water and soil science. Kadence “Kadi” Price is the salutatorian.

RAVENSWOOD, W.Va. (WV News) – On Saturday, May 17, the Riverfront Park in Ravenswood turned the clock back to the 1920s. The event kicked off with a grand opening of "Behind Clara's Lens: the Life and Photography of Clara Weisheit" at The Great Bend Museum. Museum director Faith Walker wore her 20s finest and others followed. The event consisted of food trucks, music, dancing and a classic car show.
Goodson to perform national anthem for Charleston Dirty Birds

RAVENSWOOD, W.Va. (WV News) – Singing and performing in front of a crowd is nothing new for Emily Goodson who began singing in church when she was 5 years old. The now 16-year-old Ravenswood High School student and Rave Revue participant is gearing up to sing in front of a larger crowd. She was selected to perform the national anthem for the Charleston Dirty Birds baseball team on May 29 and August 14.
President’s response thrills local kindergarten students

Margaret Schiefer, a kindergarten teacher at Gilmore Elementary, was teaching her class about the presidents in February for President’s Day.
