Sioux Empire Fair Manager Scott Wick told county commissioners on Tuesday he is in recovery mode after a brain tumor struggle that started last October. Wick, who is entering his 15th year of leading the fair and is credited with restoring faith in the operation since a devastating embezzlement case before he took over, said surgery took out 98 percent of the tumor but he is still being monitored for any regrowth. “I feel very lucky,” he said.

With dry conditions still prevailing along with windy conditions, the Minnehaha County Commission again put an open burn ban in place on Tuesday. The ban takes effect immediately, but Director of Emergency Management Jason Gearman said he had talked with the National Weather Service and there were chances for more rain in the coming days including over the Easter weekend. “It looks like a wet pattern ahead,” he said, but the conditions would all depend on how much rainfall the county receives.

Homeowners in the Sioux Falls School District will pay less in property taxes next year under a tentative budget adopted on Monday. School District Business Manager Todd Vik they take taxpayer's pocketbooks seriously when adopting a budget. “We not only look out for what’s good for students, the staff, the community but also for the taxpayers, too,” he said as the School Board unanimously approved a tentative budget for the upcoming school year.

Many families like to plan ahead, so the Sioux Falls School District has released its calendar for not only next school year, but on Monday night the School Board also approved the dates for the 2026-2027 school year. Jamie Nold, who will take over superintendent duties in July, said many families and staff really do plan that far ahead and are already reaching out to the school about the calendar.

He took the plunge in 2021 beginning to rehab a structure that is one of only two remaining former neighborhood grocery stores that were popular in the city more than 100 years ago. Today, Perch restaurant and coffee shop open on the first floor at 100 S. Grange Ave.
