Phillips Brewing & Malting Co. just announced they are teaming up with Roast this summer, as the eatery is losing their kitchen space in Victoria’s Public Market. Roast will be establishing a pop-up kitchen at the Phillips Tasting Room this summer, through to September and will be pairing their food with the brewery’s well-known craft beer.

Two film and music enthusiasts have come together to launch an event series that highlights independent, underground films and live music in Victoria. Destroyed Cinema + Music pairs a film screening of a low budget, underground film with local bands and musicians that pair well with what is being viewed. The initiative was started by Nick Workman and JP Meldrum, who both share a love for the DIY mentality and the community that surrounds underground art.

According to a recent report by Royal LePage, the Greater Victoria housing market has remained balanced in the first quarter of 2025. This report found that the aggregate home price in Greater Victoria has increased slightly, by 2.6% since this time last year to $1,061,700. Since the last quarter of 2024, home prices have increased by 1.3%.

With the federal election just two weeks away and the leaders’ debates taking place this week, the Leaders’ Debates Commission has rescinded the Green Party of Canada’s invitation to participate at the last minute. The French-language debate will be taking place on Wednesday, April 16th and the English debate is taking place on Thursday, April 17th, but the Green’s co-leader Jonathan Pedneault is no longer allowed to participate.

This week, LifeLabs workers will be marching on the BC legislature in protest of an American company owning and operating the BC-based laboratory. In 2024, the American Fortune 500 company Quest Diagnostics purchased LifeLabs for $1.35 billion. LifeLabs is responsible for the majority of outpatient lab work done across the province, and months after the sale, its workers took to the picket lines in order to fight for fair wages and better patient care.

Next month, Vancouver Island University (VIU) students will be making an attempt to bring home the record for the world’s largest Nanaimo Bar. The culinary arts, professional baking and pastry arts programs are joining forces for this lofty attempt on May 17th. Currently, the record belongs to a local chocolatier based out of the small community of Levack, Ontario, around 50 kilometres northwest of Sudbury. The current record is a 530-pound Nanaimo Bar.
