Health care professionals from institutions across Salt Lake and Davis County came together recently for a Health Care Leadership roundtable at Davis Technical College. They discussed their professional needs and how Davis Tech programs can help produce highly skilled workers.
Topics included a need for more experienced students coming out of the program and ways to improve those programs to satisfy that need.

Firefighters risk their lives daily but that’s not the leading cause of death – it’s cancer. An important bill, HB65 Firefighter Cancer Amendments, that will provide medical support and access to cancer screenings and early detection was passed by the legislature March 5. “This is enormous,” said South Davis Metro Fire Chief Greg Stewart. “There is exposure on every fire we go on. This bill makes screenings accessible for all departments with tracking and coverage by workers compensation.

FARMINGTON—Housing prices in Davis County along with other areas have skyrocketed over the past few years making it almost impossible for low-to-moderate income families to get a home of their own. With that in mind, the Davis County Commission announced the creation of the new homeownership assistance program to help those families. “Home prices have never been so high,” said Ryan Steinbeigle, Grants AdministratorDavis County Community & Economic Development.

SALT LAKE CITY—Former Congressman Chris Stewart has been appointed as chair of the Utah Aerospace and Defense Association. The organization “promotes and advocates for companies that are developing the next generation of aerospace and defense technology.”Stewart resigned from Congress last month citing his wife’s health. While in office, he served on the U.S. House of Representatives Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and the Appropriations Committee. “It’s going to be fun,” said Stewart.

LAYTON—When Kristie Nelson got the news in May that she had breast cancer her first thought was what the future would hold for her and her children. Nelson didn’t want to tell them until she had all the information so she was mostly on her own through the process for the first one or two months. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and physicians and patients are encouraging women to take the steps necessary to prevent the disease. “In the beginning it was really hard,” Nelson said.

KAYSVILLE—The Catalyst Center opened up a new program this fall that will give high school students the opportunity to become a physical therapy (PT) aide and start working in the field even before graduation. The PT class gives hands-on instruction from two practicing physical therapists and allows students to get a look at what the career would be like. “It’s been a popular field for a long time,” said Brian Pennock, DPT, ATC, CSCS who team teaches the class with Daniel Sedgwick, DPT, AT-C.
