A purpose-driven tale about grappling with big emotions; unlikely to entice kids, but potentially useful to caregivers. Charlie is all set for a day of fun, but when he notices his little sister, Pia, playing with his new fire truck, he sees red. In an attempt to get his favorite toy back, Charlie hits Pia. Mom defuses the situation by speaking gently to him about his emotions: “You’re a good kid having a hard time. And I’m here. I’m right here with you.” There’s no mention of a timeout, no yelling.

Getty | OR ImagesThere's a phrase that I hear parents say all the time: "I just want my kids to be happy."But as a child psychologist and a mother of three kids, I've seen how optimizing for happiness in childhood can do more harm than good. Of course, I don't want my kids to be unhappy. But when we make happiness the goal, we start to see our kids' distressing feelings as problems to fix, rather than emotions to tolerate.

Your kid's behavior today is not indicative of the adult they're going to become. It doesn't mean they’ll meltdown when someone cuts them in line at the grocery store. It doesn't mean they’ll yell at their boss. Kids don't have the skills to regulate their emotions … yet.

Today’s goal: 10 minutes of uninterrupted, 1:1 time with each kid. No phones, no siblings, no distractions. Our attention is our most valuable asset - and the one our kids want the most. A short burst of fully-present 1:1 time can lead to a whole day of better behavior.

Just a reminder: Holidays don't have to be perfect to be good. For example... Whining doesn't erase gratitude. Bickering doesn't cancel out love. Meltdowns don't negate special moments. You've got this.
