Kirsty Chabert will be the first down the centre line at the 2025 Mars Badminton Horse Trials (7–11 May) as the draw for the Gloucestershire five-star is revealed. Kirsty will start as number one with Classic VI, and will wear number 89 with Opposition Heraldik Girl. Last year’s Badminton champions Caroline Powell and Greenacres Special Cavalier will go second, and Caroline is 98th with her second ride High Time.

Concerns have been shared in the breeding community over the registration of part-bred foals and those whose full pedigree is unknown. Confusion arose after Defra issued a recent communication to studbooks stating that some breed societies had been registering part-bred equines in their main studbooks when they are not eligible – and those doing so must stop immediately. On 16 April Defra then issued guidance to help “address any necessary corrections to non-compliance”.

The cost of a riding school licence can vary by more than £2,500 between local authorities – as a new report highlights inconsistencies. At the end of December Defra published its findings from a post-implementation review of the Animal Welfare (Licensing of Activities Involving Animals) (England) Regulations 2018, which H&H reported had taken place two years ago (news, 2 February 2023). The review considered evidence on the effectiveness of the regulations.

By Suzanne JonesJohn Jacks, the former British Showjumping (BS) chairman died peacefully on 1 April, aged 90. John was a well-known horseman who had been involved in horses for his whole life. He was a respected BS judge, course-designer and trainer, and a long-standing member of the BS volunteer network, area representative for Norfolk from 1986 to 1997, while working as operations manager for Air UK. John was chair from 2003 to 2004.
