3,3,3-Trifluoro-1,2-propanediol undergoes complete defluorination in two distinct steps: first, the conversion into 3,3,3-trifluoropropionaldehyde catalyzed by adenosylcobalamin (coenzyme B )-dependent diol dehydratase; second, non-enzymatic elimination of all three fluorides from this aldehyde to afford malonic semialdehyde (3-oxopropanoic acid), which is decarboxylated to acetaldehyde.

Crystallography is just over a century old; it underpins many of the greatest discoveries of the 21st century and is directly responsible for 29 Nobel Prizes to date. It explains why water freezes, why chocolate melts on the tongue, why a drug like thalidomide can be both lifesaving and lethal, and why cement cracks in pavements; and yet it is usually omitted from secondary school curricula (Kantardjieff et al., 2010) and is quickly disappearing from undergraduate courses around the world.
