A former University of Kansas student employee who is transgender is suing the school for firing him for speaking to the media about policy changes affecting LGBTQ+ students. Anthony Alvarez alleges in the lawsuit filed on Thursday that he was wrongfully terminated from his position as a proctor, which is similar to a resident assistant, for speaking to the media.

LAWRENCE, Kansas — Shelley Miles lives on a quaint, tree lined street in Lawrence. She used to share her split-level home with her husband, Kirk. But then he was diagnosed with dementia. Miles said in 2021, Kirk’s memory issues progressed quickly. “He was much more agitated, kind of confrontational. He was hallucinating,” she said. Kirk started wandering away from the house late at night. She felt like she had to watch him day and night to keep him safe.

A Kansas medical researcher may have unlocked a new pathway to treatment for an aggressive form of breast cancer. Dr. Joan Lewis-Wambi, a longtime researcher and professor of cancer biology at the University of Kansas Medical Center, said she and her research team have identified a protein that is overexpressed in Black women with triple negative breast cancer.

Those workers also help connect people to public assistance such as Medicaid, decipher medical bills or find providers that are covered by their insurance.
