HMAS Brisbane fired a Tomahawk Land Attack Missile (TLAM) during its ongoing interchangeability deployment in the US. The firing is the third in a trifecta of capability demonstrations completed by Hobart class air warfare destroyers off the US West Coast this year. In July and August, HMAS Sydney fired the Naval Strike Missile and Standard Missile 6 in Australian firsts.

Austal has moved the Guardian-class Patrol Boat (GCPB) Aitana off hardstands at Henderson in what appears to be preparation for handover to Fiji. In October, Fiji announced that its second GCPB, RFNS Puamau, would be decommissioned, resulting in a capability gap. Aitana was originally intended for Timor-Leste, however, it had been on a hard stand at Henderson since May after the Southeast Asian country indefinitely delayed delivery.

Australia donated several Joint Direct Attack Munition Extended-Range (JDAM-ER) glide bombs to Ukraine following their withdrawal from Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) service. Defence’s Guided Weapons and Explosive Ordnance Plan, released on 30 October, revealed that Australia withdrew its inventory of Australian-built Mk.82 500lb JDAM-ER munitions from service in 2021 alongside the retirement of the F/A-18A/B Classic Hornet fleet.

Informed by recent conflicts in the Red and Black Seas the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) is seeking new capabilities for its inventory of Mk45 5-inch (127mm) guns. Both conflicts in have highlighted a need for more cost-effective responses to asymmetric capabilities like small Uncrewed Aerial Systems (UAS). In recent months, Warships operating in the Red Sea have often been forced to expend multi-million dollar missiles against relatively cheap UAS that were threatening them or commercial shipping.

The People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) newest Type 055 Guided Missile Destroyer, Xianyang (108), arrived in Port Vila, Vanuatu, on 21 October. Xianyang berthed alongside a Type 052DL, Nanning (162) at Port Vila’s cruise ship wharf. Nanning appears to have arrived around a day before Xianyang on 20 October according to images posted to Facebook.

By Ben Felton | Canberra | 14 October 2024The 1st Armoured Regiment will trial a modified version of the electric Protected Mobility Vehicle (ePMV) prototype as part of its new role as an experimental unit. Army unveiled the ePMV, powered by a 113-kilowatt-hour battery, at the 2022 Chief of Army Symposium in Adelaide. The design's key benefits, touted at the time, were its lower thermal signature compared to a normal Bushmaster and the ability to loiter silently and easily export power.
