Security Council resolution calling for stepped-up aid for the Gaza’s Strip’s embattled civilians would fail to stop the spiraling humanitarian crisis because it did not demand a full halt to the fighting. The resolution called on the U.N. secretary-general to appoint a special coordinator for aid to Gaza and establish a mechanism to speed up aid delivery in consultation with all relevant parties.

Israel’s military said early Friday it was resuming fighting because Hamas had violated the previously agreed-upon truce after a projectile was fired from Gaza in the final minutes of the cease-fire. International mediators said talks were continuing in the hopes of a breakthrough. The deadline for the weeklong truce between Israel and Hamas expired 7 a.m. Friday local time. Diplomatic talks had come down to the wire with indications earlier in the night that the negotiations may have broken down.

Israel and Hamas said they agreed Thursday to extend their cease-fire in the Gaza Strip, keeping alive tenuous hopes for a lasting halt to the fighting. Minutes before the truce was set to expire on Thursday morning at 7 a.m. local time, Hamas said in a statement that it would last another day. Israel’s military announced the deal on social media around the same time, but did not immediately provide details on a timeline.
