Lawrence Richard Mato, 89, of Butler, Pennsylvania, passed away on May 9, 2025, at Butler Memorial Hospital. He was born October 12, 1935 in Connellsville, Pennsylvania to the late Joseph Mato and Barbara Jane (Soberdash) Mato. Lawrence was a 1954 graduate of Stowe High School, now known as StoRocks High School. He attended the University of Tennessee. Lawrence was a veteran of the United States Air Force where he served as Airman 1st Class in Sacramento, California.

Mars Area School District students will observe Mental Health Awareness Month with theme days this week. Monday has been designated “Music Monday” and kids are encouraged to wear a t-shirt featuring their favorite band or music genre. Tuesday is “Tie-Dye Tuesday” with students able to wear tie-dye or colorful clothes. Other themes include “Wellness Wednesday”, “Tranquil Thursday” and “Feel Good Friday”. In addition, Mars will join in the Mental Health America “Be Seen in Green” Challenge.

A local school district is making some security changes. According to our news partners at WPXI, Mars Area School District has declined to renew their longtime contract with the Adams Township Police Department. A statement on the department’s Facebook page says the department had been providing resource officers since 2012. This decision will impact resource officers at the middle school and high school.

A local lawmaker is part of a group preparing to lay out a plan to make Pennsylvania’s Unemployment Compensation Trust Fund solvent again. State Rep. Aaron Bernstine (R-10th) is participating in a press conference with fellow lawmakers Monday at 9:30 a.m. in Harrisburg. The group will be joined by the state director of the National Federation of Independent Businesses as well as a representative from the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry.

Independence Health System will celebrate National Hospital week by putting a spotlight on local healthcare workers. All IHS facilities, including Butler Memorial Hospital, will have their entrances lit with blue light to symbolize appreciation and support. In addition, the Butler County Courthouse will display a banner as a show of solidarity and gratitude. This year’s theme is We Are Health Care.
