VIRGINIA — It took a bit of time, but the Rock Ridge baseball team is finally playing the way head coach Jamie Lindseth believed his team was capable of. The Wolverines hit a rough patch early in the season, losing five of six games against section opponents. Two days into May, their record stood at 4-8. Since then, Rock Ridge has done nothing but find success. kAm(:??:?8 D6G6? @7 E96:C =2DE 6:89E C68F=2C D62D@? 82>6D[ E96 (@=G6C:?6D 4@F=5?’E 6D42A6 E96 =@H D665 277@C565 E@ E96> 3J E9@D6 62C=J D64E:@?

NORTH BRANCH — Needing a win to keep their section title hopes alive, the Rock Ridge softball team did all they could and went down swinging. Battling Chisago Lakes in game one of the Section 7AAA championship, the Wolverines and the Wildcats went into extra innings tied at one, but it was the top-seeded team from Chisago Lakes that punched their ticket to state, scoring the game-winning run by stealing home in the bottom of the 10th inning.

BIWABIK — Wednesday’s first round set up what should likely be an exciting finish for the Section 7AA boys’ golf crown on Thursday at the Quarry at Giants Ridge. Perennial power Cloquet holds the top spot with a team score of 311, but Hibbing is just three strokes back in second at 314. Hermantown is third with a 316 and Rock Ridge earned the final team slot on the second day with a 321, meaning just about every team is within reach of winning the event.

DULUTH — Area track and field stars laced up their shoes Wednesday with dozens of trips to state on the line at the Section 7A Track and Field Championships held at the University of Minnesota-Duluth. Among the most successful were Mesabi East’s Evan James and Ely’s Violet Udovich, who both captured a pair of individual section championships to earn another trip to the state meet. kAmx?

HERMANTOWN — Suffering their first loss of the playoffs just moments before, Rock Ridge head softball coach Paula Dundas needed to see her team find a response in their elimination game with Hermantown that followed. The Wolverines found the response they needed, going up 5-2 on the Hawks before holding on for a 5-4 win, earning themselves a spot in Thursday’s section championship game. kAmsC@AA:?8 :?E@ E96 6=:>:?2E:@?
