Careful not to melt, a group of local witches and a warlock took to the waters of Lake Champlain off Cliff Haven Beach in Plattsburgh Saturday as part of the second-annual Witches of the Water Parade. Organized by Elizabeth Pearl, the event originally saw 15 participants sign up, but lake winds deterred some witches from joining this year. Those witches who did join were Carol and Elizabeth Pearl, Stephanie Moore, Lorrie and Jen Cartier, Fran Schiff and warlock Ed Guenther.

PLATTSBURGH — It was a packed house at the Strand Theatre in Plattsburgh Friday afternoon, thought not with people. Instead, the seats of the auditorium were filled with donations of food and baby products as part of the third-annual Plattsburgh Noon Kiwanis Club Stuff the Strand event. The club had set a goal of 7 lbs. of goods on each of the 901 seats in the Strand Theatre. But by the end of the event Friday, they ended up with more than 20 lbs. of donations per seat.

DANNEMORA — Kelsey Neri wants to tell the truth about life with a medically complex child. Through public Facebook posts, Neri has chronicled the past year and a half since her 2-year-old daughter Cali was diagnosed with encephalitis caused by Powassan Virus from a tick bite, a condition with no known cure. But finding the balance in those posts between joyful highs and discouraging lows can be a challenge. ‘IT IS HARD’“It’s definitely not all gloom,” Kelsey said.

PLATTSBURGH — Fear is what Richard Victor remembers from his first eclipse. Thinking back to the partial eclipse of 1963, the 68-year-old Victor remembered the stern warning from his mother. “I remember as a little child my mother telling me ‘get away from the windows,’” he said. “I was always told the fear of God – don’t look into the eclipse.” The reason being, he explained, was the danger of looking directly toward the sun.
