(JTA) — On Friday, a popular Hebrew X account called “News From a Year Ago” tweeted a short video of Donald Trump, then running for U.S. president, from May 2024. “If any Jewish person voted for Joe Biden, they should be ashamed of themselves,” Trump said in the video. “He’s totally abandoned Israel and nobody can believe it.” One year later, if there’s a president many Israelis are viewing with disbelief, it’s Trump himself.

Cardinal Robert Prevost, who was just elected as Pope Leo XIV, studied under a pioneer in Jewish-Catholic relations when he attended seminary in Chicago. The Rev. John T. Pawlikowski, who taught for nearly half a century at the Catholic Theological Union until his retirement in 2017, served as co-founder and director of the school’s Catholic-Jewish Studies Program and also served four terms on the board of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum.

( JTA) - This is a developing story. Hamas has released Edan Alexander, an American-Israeli citizen, back to Israel under a deal reached with the United States. The release, conducted Monday evening in Gaza, may inaugurate a new phase in the hostage crisis that has consumed Israel since Hamas attacked on Oct. 7, 2023, taking 250 captives and opening the war in Gaza. Israeli media reported that at 6:30 local time, Hamas said it had transferred Alexander to the Red Cross after 584 days in captivity.
