Medication management will be topical in these laws’ mandatory reviews following a Queensland coronial inquest into the death of a person who consumed a VAD substance prescribed for their spouse.

AbstractObjectives As more countries legalise assisted dying, it is of increasing significance for policy-makers and the medical profession. Doctors are needed for patients to access this choice; however, there is currently limited participation. Few studies identify what factors, if any, facilitate participation in assisted dying and how the inter-relationship of multiple factors may also influence participation.

The Australian Capital Territory parliament passed its voluntary assisted dying law yesterday by 20 to five. The ACT now joins the six Australian states, all of which have their own voluntary assisted dying laws. Like the states, the ACT law will begin after an 18-month implementation period. So eligible residents will be able to access voluntary assisted dying from November 3 2025. This leaves only the Northern Territory without such a law.

Dementia is the second leading cause of death for Australians aged over 65. More than 421,000 Australians currently live with dementia and this figure is expected to almost double in the next 30 years. There is ongoing public discussion about whether dementia should be a qualifying illness under Australian voluntary assisted dying laws. Voluntary assisted dying is now lawful in all six states, but is not available for a person living with dementia.

DiscussionThis study describes the Australian adult public’s knowledge and experiences regarding substitute decision-making for medical decisions and their preferences for obtaining more information about the SDM role. Less than four in ten participants reported that they had heard of, or discussed, ACP and only 11% reported having documented their ACP preferences.
