1 SHARE TENANCY AND AGRARIAN COMMODIFICATION In the early 1970s, when the second author studied sharecropping relations in the Javanese village Kaliloro, it was widely assumed the Green Revolution in rice cultivation would lead to the disappearance of share tenancy and its replacement by cash rental and/or petty capitalist farming using wage labour.
