ITHACA, N.Y. (WENY) -- The Ithaca Science Center announced on Tuesday, April 15th that roughly $500,000 in already federally approved grants has been clawed back. According to the Science Center, only $100,000 of the money had been spent. "The loss of these grants is devastating. These grants were vital to extending that reach, particularly to rural communities that are often overlooked,” said Michelle Kortenaar, executive director of the Ithaca Science Center.

SCHUYLER COUNTY, N.Y. (WENY) -- The Schuyler County Historical Society announced they are hosting a special tour of three historic buildings in the County that will include food, lectures, and even a short concert. The special Grande Tour is happening on May 3rd, and will involve the Brick Tavern Museum, the Lee School and the Lawrence Chapel. The Tour will meet at the Schuyler County Human Services Complex where a bus will take guests to the Brick Tavern Museum.

NEW YORK (WENY) -- New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli announced on Wednesday, April 15th that former Village of Candor mayor Eric Halstead was sentenced to 60 days in jail for stealing Village funds. According to DiNapoli, Halstead stole $23,519 from Candor between February 2017 and May 2023. “Halstead was elected to serve his community but chose instead to steal from it,” said Thomas DiNapoli, New York State Comptroller, adding, “He now faces the consequences of his crime.

ITHACA, N.Y. (WENY) -- FEMA has issued updated Flood Insurance Rate Maps for the City of Ithaca that will have a major impact on some residents if its not adopted. As it stands, the City Common Council Common is scheduled to adopt Local Law Chapter 186 at their May 7th meeting. The City of Ithaca is required to adopt the new maps to continue participation in the National Flood Insurance Program.
