For 2025, Edgartown Race Weekend will say goodbye to its two-day, ’Round-the-Sound Races of recent years and hello to a fresh new focus on its centerpiece ’Round-the-Island Race (’RTI), which will be 88 years old when it begins on Saturday, June 21. Although it’s one of yacht racing’s oldest distance events, the 55-mile circumnavigation of Martha’s Vineyard is anything but staid, thanks to host Edgartown Yacht Club (EYC).

The third annual Rhody Regatta, hosted by the International Yacht and Athletic Club (IYAC) based in Newport, RI and benefiting the Rhode Island Community Food Bank headquartered in Providence, takes place Saturday, May 31, helping kick off the Narragansett Bay sailing season with a single mid-distance race, approximately 18 miles around Jamestown (Conanicut Island).

Much rum has been spilled, I suggest, over discussions pertaining to “The Perfect Boat.” Most likely The Perfect Boat is the one that suits your purposes, closely followed by the one you have…The boats for folks who like racing, gunkholing, entertaining their mates or ocean voyaging are all vastly different, yet each owner might argue theirs is the perfect boat. Few of us are in a position to create a craft we view as the perfect boat.

Craig Leweck, Editor of Scuttlebutt, put out a great opinion piece in the February 11th issue, “Losing Site of the Magic Formula.” The topic always hits me like banging my funny bone. It stings like hell and has no obvious cure! The issue is should classes, in this case the J/70, outlaw techniques that can really only be mastered by professional sailors. If classes can figure out a solution, they would maintain, as Craig said, the magic formula that keeps one-design participation high.

By Michael Rudnick, Regatta Co-chairNoroton Yacht Club won the 25th Annual Kirby Cup Team Race Championship in a tie breaking final sail-off with New York Yacht Club. The racing, hosted by Noroton Yacht Club in Darien, CT September 27-29, was very tight amongst teams representing the host club NYC, New York Yacht Club, Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club and Larchmont Yacht Club, with many college alumni on the racetrack battling it out for the top spot.
