When you’re trying to catch other boats on a windward leg, the good news is that the fleet usually spreads out a lot on beats. If the wind changes very much in direction or velocity, this separation creates good passing opportunities. But the bad news is that the boats you’re trying to catch are all between you and the wind. This means you must constantly dodge wind shadows, especially when you are sailing toward the ‘favored’ side.

As I work on her, I wonder so much about the person who built her. I love studying history and I recognize this wooden yacht as a piece of art. Her name is the Miracle. This race has a long history with the Twenty Hundred Club and consists of a race to Block Island, a lay day and then a return race, originally on Victory Day. For 2024, The Party Tree and fleet was looking forward to a great race with typical Rhode Island conditions. At 1030 a fleet of nine boats in cruising and racing divisions took off into a solid 15-knot southeasterly.

The Birds Aboard article by Dorothy Wadlow caught my eye. My friend with five others delivered his Oyster across the Atlantic from St. Maarten to Spain in order to do some cruising in the Med and Adriatic. After a mixed sail and motoring some of the time, we picked up two pigeons off Madera. They settled on the rear deck and looked fatigued. We gave them water and crushed cereal as we had no bird food.
