The Between Two Beers podcast started with just a microphone, a few bottles and 25 years of friendship. Little did hosts Steve Halloway and Seamus Marten know it would become one of Aotearoa’s most popular listens. ‘How many beers do you go through each recording?” Given the podcast’s title, when does the drinking start? “We record on Thursday morning at 9am, I’m not going to have a beer at that time,” says Steve Halloway, co-host of Between Two Beers.

Rumours of print’s demise have been flying around for years, but magazines are one format that refuses to die. The social networking app was released in 2020, but had a moment in 2023, when it was prompting more than 20 million users to take a picture at a random time of day.

Student station 95bFM has struggled to survive since its first broadcast in 1969 – but its history of hardship also makes it ideally placed to innovate. 2024 has been a rough year for media in Aotearoa. Redundancy after redundancy has shrunk an already diminished industry even further. For some, it’s like watching a car fire. But for independent student radio station 95bFM, this is just another day.
