“The oud sounds too bassy,” the sexagenarian oudist says, nodding towards Moe, one of the founders of Dearborn, Michigan’s premier – possibly only? – noise rock outfit, Prostitute. “Too bassy?”, Moe echoes back, getting up from his chair to have a look, to maybe provide some assistance. The oudist is warm and grandfatherly, and probably is someone’s grandfather. “I don’t know what to do.

Last week I had a spill. And when I say, ‘had a spill’, I mean I fell down hard. Fell in a way that I imagine the elderly fall, like a grain silo toppling over, with no hope for any sort of damage mitigation. As far as glimpses into the not-so-distant future (when I will no longer have the luxury of time and semi-resilient bones) go, it kinda sucked. It’s funny, though.

If you know of her, but don’t know her, probably you wouldn’t guess it, but my partner has deep musical roots in folk, in the stuff of grange halls. We’ve had years of easy Sunday mornings, her intuitively plucking at an ancient banjo in the kitchen over coffee. Years of willing her century-old Sears fiddle to stay in tune. When we first met, eighteen years ago, she had a radio show devoted to old-timey folk and country practitioners.

“Snakes, why’d it have to be snakes?”We all know that one. So, how about Mattie Ross? Having just dispatched her father’s killer, our heroine stumbles backwards into an old mining pit, landing next to a long-dead frontiersman. As if that ain’t bad enough, her foot is all caught up in a tangle. Searching for a way to free herself, she accidentally uncovers a nest of slumbering rattlers who’ve made cozy in the desiccated chest of her newfound corpsey compatriot. They menace and bite. An arm is lost.

Apparently, Earth Ball are from British Columbia, but to hear them play, you’d think that’s wrong. Perhaps even inappropriate. To hear them play, you’d make up some sunbaked armpit in the California desert. One of those non-towns unincorporated at some point in the last forty years, both built up and ruined by land and/or resource speculation. A place untouched by those celebrity ayahuasca wellness retreats the Burning Man one percent are always going on about. A place almost entirely run on gennies.

RT @theQuietus: "I love The Stooges and Fun House and The Rolling Stones. But I was tired of guitar then – and especially now. I think guit…

Wrote about Dearborn's finest - possibly only? - noise rock ensemble. Had a ball interviewing the Pros boys while gorging myself on Turkish delicacies. Check it out over at @theQuietus!

“We’d been working on [the album] for four years – it was just driving us crazy... We almost killed each other. People got what we were trying to do. And given the zeitgeist right now – unfortunately – it’s kind of the perfect moment.” Prostitute Interviewed https://t.co/yc9818Luu4

Got to retell one of my favorite Irish folktales, write a bit about the particular appeal of folklore, and touch briefly upon the radical nature of stillness - all in the context of @laurarecorder's breathtaking & monumental A Year of Lore! Chegg it oot over at tQ!

'Laura Cannell reinforces her reputation as a master storyteller in sound, capable of rendering instrumental narratives so true to the spirit of the folkloric themes and traditions that birthed them as to almost be conjurings' @laurarecorder - A Year Of Lore https://t.co/Fu6BVlVxPU
