Comic-Con celebrated its 50th show in 2019 and had grown into an event that sprawled beyond the Convention Center, attracting upwards of 130,000 attendees. But it wasn't always that big. KPBS arts reporter Beth Accomando spoke with a handful of longtime attendees — including two who had been there since the very beginning — about why they keep coming back, and what the event has meant to them over the decades.

0 Flares 0 Flares × Empire Skate reminded me a little of SCALA!!! The Incredibly Strange Rise and Fall of the World’s Wildest Cinema and How It Influenced A Mixed-Up Generation Of Weirdos And Misfits. And if you tweaked that subtitle a little it would also fit Empire Skate. Both films celebrate in punky fashion, the fierce passions of a particular niche culture. SCALA! was about fringy cinephiles and Empire Skate is about young skateboarders in 1980s and 1990s New York City.

In 2023, I did a story on the graffiti murals being painted at Arcade Monsters in East Village. But I hadn't had a chance to return and explore the full 13,000-square-foot space of retro and modern gameplay until now. I interviewed graffiti artists in October 2023 about the amazing blacklight murals that were transforming the gaming venue into an unexpected art gallery featuring mashups of all your favorite pop culture icons.
