Sending warmth to everyone on this Mother's Day, whatever this day means for you. For some, it's a celebration; for others, a day of remembrance or complex emotions. Twenty nine years ago, I became a mother. This year marks my first Mother's Day without any of my children around, bringing its own unique blend of emotions. As Dr. B and I sail in Thailand with dear friends, I'm reminded that motherhood is carried in the heart, regardless of geography.

Weekend pancakes have been a cherished tradition in our family for as long as I can remember. Back when our children were small (and refined grains were still on our menu), Dr. B would transform an ordinary boxed pancake mix into magical creations like dinosaurs, pandas, and koalas. Our family's health journey took a significant turn in 2013 when we eliminated refined grains from our diet. This transition challenged me to recreate our weekend pancake breakfasts.

Some of my fondest Easter memories are from the years we hosted Easter egg hunts on our country property in Occidental, California. I remember watching little ones scramble through fields and gardens, checking every nook and cranny for hidden treasures (even the chicken coop where they would sometimes find a “real” egg)—and that memorable rainy year when muddy footprints marked every surface of our home! And then there was the year my son Nolan hatched a clutch of duck eggs in his incubator.

I have kept chickens since 2004, when our family moved from South Pasadena to Sebastopol, California. My children grew up with chicken chores and fresh eggs as part of their daily lives. We taught all of our children baby sign language so they could communicate their needs long before they could speak. When my son was born, his first baby sign wasn't "mama" or "more," but "bird." We've always said he was born a bird lover. Nolan is 16 now, and his passion for birds has only grown.
