Karen Horn Welch will become chief investment officer of Spider Management, the investment office that manages the University of Richmond‘s endowment and assets, on July 1, the university announced this week. Will McLean, the office’s current president and CIO, will remain president through the end of 2026, when he will retire. Joining Spider Management in 2016, Welch worked first as a portfolio director and was promoted to managing director of investments. In 2024, she was named deputy CIO.

Carilion Clinic has received the state’s blessing to go ahead with a kidney transplant program, despite UVA Health‘s vocal opposition. The Roanoke-based health system announced Thursday afternoon that it had received approval for the program from Virginia’s Division of Certificate of Public Need. Carilion expects to begin kidney transplant surgeries in 2026. Currently, there is no kidney transplant surgery available in the southwestern part of Virginia.

Southern Virginia is getting hit again. Employees at Georgia-Pacific‘s Emporia plywood mill were told Friday that the company plans to permanently close the mill, with more than 550 workers losing their jobs, according to an announcement by the Georgia-based company that is one of the world’s top manufacturers and marketers of tissue, pulp, paper and related products. In a Friday statement, U.S. Rep. Jennifer McClellan, D-Petersburg, put the number of workers who lost their jobs in Emporia at 554.
