Wisconsin has been sorely lacking a place for Black residents that reinforces their sense of cultural identity. That’s the belief of Rev. Dr. Alex Gee, lead pastor of Fountain of Life Covenant Church in Madison and founder of the Nehemiah Center for Urban Leadership Development. On Juneteenth, he’ll help break ground on his latest founding: The Center for Black Excellence and Culture, a 37,000 square-foot facility on the south side of Madison.

To be honest, when I first heard Conan O’Brien was ending his TV talk show in 2021, I assumed news that he might turn to variety shows and online programs to continue his career was some combination of face-saving and wishful thinking. But after watching the four episodes of his new Max series Conan O’Brien Must Go, it’s now obvious – even to a thickheaded critic like me – that leaving late night TV really was liberating for O’Brien.

CBS is developing its first Black daytime soap opera in 35 years

CBS and the NAACP are teaming up to develop an all-new soap opera — the first new daytime drama with a predominantly Black castto air on TV in decades. The series, currently titled The Gates, will follow the lives of a wealthy Black family in a “posh, gated community,” according to a news release from the NAACP.

2019 was an important year throughout the African diaspora — the 400th year since enslaved Africans first arrived in the United States. In Ghana — once the center of the European slave trade — 2019 was declared “the year of return” and the start of a campaign to encourage descendants of enslaved Africans to re-connect with the land of their ancestors. Thousands of African-Americans made the trip to Ghana — and many have decided to stay.
Dogs like to watch dogs on TV, new study by UW researcher finds

A first-of-its-kind study by Wisconsin scientists has tracked what kinds of video content most appeals to dogs. The not-very-surprising finding: Dogs respond most to onscreen images of dogs. In addition to that, the newly published survey of more than 1,200 dog owners found that dogs bred for herding or hunting are most likely to be interested in what’s on TV, perhaps because the breeding process selected for eyesight and cooperation.
