Maybe it was having football legend Joe Kadenge as a neighbour in Nakuru while growing up, or it was passion for broadcast developed at a young age with a bottle as a microphone and following pioneer Kenyan radio legends like Stephen Kikumu. Maybe it was his unique voice, attention to detail and linguistic flair. What was certain was that Leonard Mambo Mbotela combined the most desired qualities in the art of football commentary to be one of the best Kenya has ever produced.

Last week, as I tried to compile the list of the greatest AFC Leopards players, I paused before placing John Busolo as number two to goalkeeping legend Mahmoud Abbas. The contention in my mind was whether the slot should go to Mathews “Ottamax” Owino Otama. Ottamax was known for his ego, for which he doesn’t make apologies, despite many believing it is what came between him and overtaking Mahmoud Abbas as Kenya’s greatest number one.

I  met Gerry Loughran—the Sunday Nation columnist who will be buried tomorrow—when I was incorporated into the core team that was set up to put together The East African newspaper in 1994. Members were drawn from different departments of the Nation Media Group to work under the leadership of Executive Chairman Albert Ekirapa and Managing Editor Joseph Odindo. Regular meetings were held in the 5th floor boardroom at Nation Centre.

In his twilight years, James Osogo was under pressure to write his memoirs. As one of the surviving Jomo Kenyatta and Daniel Moi-era Cabinet ministers he was definitely a depository of Kenya’s political history. Sharing what he knew would be important to many Kenyans interested in getting factual accounts around post-independence Kenya. I was privileged to be the one to work with him on this project.
