The Upper Cumberland Extension Team is hosting a Fall Lawncare Series starting Tuesday night over Zoom and continuing online through four separate meetings. UT Extension Agent Jason Garrett said that the conference will provide advice on how to care for your lawn in the fall. Garrett said that the series is freely available to the public, all citizens need to participate is the Zoom link and an internet connection.

Power of Putnam is hosting an Overdose Day awareness event Thursday at Dogwood Park. Executive Director Bill Gibson said that the event is in order to raise awareness for those affected by overdoses. He said that the event is also an effort to bring the community together to fight against drug addiction. Gibson said that drug addiction and overdoses are a prevalent problem in Putnam County, that needs to be taken seriously.

Jackson County’s Poke Sallet Foundation announced its new scholarship program Monday, for teens planning to attend trade or vocational school. Poke Sallet Foundation Board member Casey Clark-Jackson said that Blue-Collar Scholars was created for both Jackson County’s community and students. She said that as much as scholarship recipients need additional funding for school, their communities need more skilled laborers.

LL 8/28Clay County Schools remembers a long-time Hermitage Springs custodian Junior Bean. Bean was laid to rest Monday afternoon. Hermitage Principal Donatta Birdwell said that Bean was a kind and sweet character at the school for the 21-years he worked there. Pre-K teacher Scarlett Gentry said that he could always be found uplifting the spirits of all of the different people he would strike up conversations with while working.

The TennGreen Land Conservancy calling for support with an opportunity to purchase and transfer 160 acres of forested bluff lands in the Obed River Park. Executive Director Alice Hudson Pell said it came to their attention that a portion of the Obed Scenic River in the Clear Creek area would be available to purchase after being privately held for generations. Hudson Pell said the total price tag sits at some $565,000.

With temperatures in the mid-90s continuing, staying hydrated is the most important thing you can do to prevent overheating. That’s according to Jackson County EMS Public Information Officer Derek Woolbright. He said it is important to drink plenty of water throughout the day, and less soft drinks and alcohol. “We have so much water in our county, so many areas of recreation where people are out and about,” Woolbright said.
