TO THE EDITOR: Say goodbye to Pell grants for college? Many Benzie residents depend on Pell Grants to lower the cost of attending college.. be it a 4 year school or a community college. Those days may be ending. The Republicans in Congress introduced a massive bill to restructure how Americans pay for college. Benzie-bound community college students already face high costs to attend because they have to pay out of county tuition.

TO THE EDITOR: The Right for All Children to Receive a Public EducationAll children in the United States have a right to a free, public education regardless of their race, creed, national origin, citizenship, national origin or immigration status and regardless of the status of their parent/guardian. The 14th Amendment provides this right. Additionally, all school districts in Michigan have the right to refuse entry to immigration officers without a valid warrant or subpoena.

Again another lie from him. But what is a truth is that a second Trump presidency will set America back in terms of progress on civil rights, economic equality, environmental protection and education as it implements Project 2025.

I'm not the world's largest fan of "free" hotel breakfasts. A free breakfast is, of course, better than no breakfast and sounds good in theory. But hopes are dashed with every lift of a chafing dish lid. Rubbery, bland eggs, leaden pastries that couldn't show their faces in Paris, and coffee that simpers rather than shines turn the idea of a hot, delicious morning meal into wishful thinking.

Because those who are vowed religious tend not to adopt a "hey, look at me" attitude toward their accomplishments, it may go largely unnoticed and unremarked upon in contemporary society that U.S. Catholic health care has an extraordinary legacy of leadership. Women religious, brothers and priests raised funds and built hospitals where none existed in this country. They tended to wounded soldiers on battlefields, through smallpox outbreaks and in leprosy colonies.

I went in for a routine screening as a patient years ago, having just written for CHA about the latest electronic medical record advances, to have a care provider write some of my details on a sticky note and slip it in her pocket to add to my files later. Strapped for time, she was undoubtedly doing the expedient thing, if not perhaps the one with the greatest likelihood of making sure the right information went into the right file.
