Our country is arguably more divided today than at any time since the Civil War. If there is any truth in the statement “United We Stand, Divided We Fall,” we are clearly a nation in descent. The angst and concern is everywhere. Our most recent presidents as well as Congress have failed us miserably in this regard and have even contributed to our anxiety. Somewhere in our midst, we must discover someone, anyone, of any race or gender who understands the urgency of our coming together as a nation.

So much for my speculation yesterday that perhaps the PRC would wait until the end of the three-day Tomb Sweeping Festival holiday to respond to the US tariffs. Late Friday afternoon Beijing time, and nicely timed just before the US stock market open, the authorities announced retaliations using the expected breadth of their economic coercion response toolbox.
