Good morning. Let’s basketball. La Salle Clarac; Edouard Vuillard; 1922LaMelo Ball is leading the NBA in field goal attempts per game with 24.6. He’s averaging 3.2 FGAs more than No. 2 Nikola Jokic. That gap is as big as the gap between Jokic and No. 19 on the list (Jalen Brunson). It’s frankly unreal how many more shots per game LaMelo is taking compared everyone else in the league. And that’s before you realize how inefficient LaMelo is compared to all of those other players.

Good morning. Let’s basketball. The Peasant Dance; Pieter Bruegel the Elder; 1568It’s the last night of the NBA Cup group stage and hell, I’m finding this edition pretty entertaining, at least in the East where the Atlanta Hawks have already won a group that includes the two best teams in the conference and the Detroit Pistons have a shot to join them. Here are all the games with something at stake, with the game ordered by tip time, all of which are Eastern.

This is a list of teams I do not think will win the NBA championship in 2024-25. Chicago Bulls — Josh Giddey plays like he bets on the Bulls to lose every game and by a lot. Utah Jazz — the other night Utah Jazz forward John Collins was in the lane for three or four or five seconds but the referees didn’t whistle him for a three-second infraction, letting Collins dunk instead. They probably felt sorry for John after whistling him for a five-second inbound infraction the last time Utah had the ball.

We did this with the East. Some of it went over. WARRIORSHot: I was completely wrong about Buddy Hield (52/51/86 percentage splits, eight turnovers in 206 minutes), busting his tail defensively as best Buddy can for the NBA’s third-ranked defense. I’ve been more or less spotless with everything else. Pretty amazing run, really, I even called the Winter’s Sad Food Snack of 2024-25 (pierogies).

Ever get the feeling people aren’t ready to NBA yet? Fans don’t want the pressure of pretending these games mean much. Or that they are played exceedingly well, or that NBA performers aren’t conditioned to pace themselves to be at best in April, May and June, not November. So they, uh, they pace themselves. Or players don’t close out. Or they shoot long jumpers instead of passing or cutting. Or they don’t get back. Or they get back too much and don’t close out on the trailer.

Good morning. Let’s basketball. Corner of a Café-Concert; Edouard Manet; 1879Mavericks 120, Timberwolves 114 — How they went out against the Mavericks in the West finals after taking care of the Nuggets must haunt the Wolves, and especially Anthony Edwards. He went to war with the demons in the first quarter on Tuesday. But Minnesota couldn’t build much of a lead, and the Mavericks are good, even when Luka Doncic isn’t scoring particularly efficiently. Kyrie Irving stepped up on the offensive end.

Good morning. Let’s basketball. Infanta Margarita Teresa in a Blue Dress; Diego Velazquez; 1659Celtics 122, Wizards 102 — For a brief, beautiful moment in this game, Jordan Poole appeared to join the MVP Longlist. Seventeen points in the first seven minutes against the reigning champs. For the remainder of the game, though, he had nine points on 3/9. Alas. It was too beautiful for this world. Boston waited until the third to really break this open, having hit only nine threes in the first half.

I have a lot of things coming my way, most recently COVID-19 checked in. Last week was my first positive test, my initial experience with the virus outside of whatever second-cousin variation they jabbed me with inside those vaccines. How many of those was I supposed to get? I just kept showing up for new ones every week. Possibly because of this, I’m still rather dazed; over a week after my first meeting with its airborne particulars.

Last week, I was in New York to meet with reporters—and to attend an event in which a series of intellectual Substackers debated whether or not it was empowering to wax one’s sacred orifices—in an attempt to explain why Substack is much more than just a newsletter platform. The vision for what we’re building is giant, and I want everyone to know it. In trying to convey to the reporters just how profound this emerging media system can be, I found myself talking a lot about magic dust.
