    Julie Ardery and I watched voters come and go for twelve hours at Precinct 101N, otherwise known as the La Grange (Texas) City Hall. We worked the election, checking in people on the little electronic poll books, giving them ballots, and, the most fun, handing out red, white and blue “I Voted” stickers. Throughout the day we privately speculated about what we were seeing. For a few hours it seemed the vast majority of voters were women.

    Whether we like it or not, state Highway 75 is the only way into and out of our beloved valley. And that highway is about to undergo a massive transformation. For a preview of coming attractions, on your next drive between Hailey and Ketchum, check out the Idaho Transportation Department’s red flags and stakes marking its upcoming plans to create an expressway up and down our valley. Those flags and stakes say it all. The plan was initially passed in 2008. Much has changed in our valley since then.

    The first shopper arrived at 3:30 a.m., five and a half hours before the doors opened. By 9 o’clock, 202 people stood in line in front of Second Chance Emporium, a second-hand store and rural retail phenomenon in La Grange, Texas. When the doors finally cracked open, it was off to the races, as shoppers poured into the 20,000 square foot shop in search of….well, everything. Pants go for a buck or two. The same with shirts or dresses. A couch? $25. Shoes cost two dollars. A table for $10.
