Trumpā€™s tariffs shocked my home city in the Yangtze River Delta region, one of whose most important economic pillars is import and export. On April 2, the day the White House announced it, I happen to have dinner plans two school friends in the export business. One friendā€™s family business specializes in auto parts. Heā€™s not worried at all and said the American clients were willing to absorb the additional cost.

They used to expose news that riled up the nation and regulators for years and now, the show exposes the bottom-of-the-barrel level scandals that people don’t care much about. Why? It’s widely known in communications that whether a corporation can avoid negative light in state media is contingent on its large advertising contracts.

Last weekend, I shared about my trip to Mixue, today I want to show you what I saw and was thinking when visiting Shangqiu, the founders’ hometown and one of the birthplaces of Chinese civilization. I had to admit that my Shangqiu trip wasn’t thoroughly planned, I only visited the main tourism sites and stayed at the supposedly best local hotel (Xinhua Nation-Building Hotel, same as the nickname Chinese people gave to Trump).
