Like many people who enjoy taking a closer look at some of the biggest heroes in American history, Schenectady City Historian Chris Leonard is sometimes a bit disappointed. I remember way back when, when I was a young boy, how surprised I was when I discovered that George Washington owned as many as 123 slaves, and that Abraham Lincoln once defended a slave holder. History, like life, can get complicated.
