It isn’t every day that you see or read about a proposal to build ownership condominiums in our state. Under Colorado State law, there is an unusually high risk of construction liability to the developer. Our state legislature has not been able to resolve a more equitable policy to encourage condos. Not only do condos represent home ownership, but they are viewed as an entry point to ownership – depending, of course, on the price range.

Anyone who thinks President-elect Donald Trump is simply “blowing smoke” at implementing an aggressive deportation program is bad wrong. Remember, he is the one who said immigrants are “poisoning the blood of America.” It is being planned as we speak with two of the most hawkist anti-immigrant appointees in Trump’s soon-to-be cadre of henchmen. Policy-maker Stephen Miller and “Border Czar” Tom Homan are scary people. They are dead serious in first going after immigrants who are criminals.

With so many cabinet and high ranking staff positions already announced by incoming-President Donald Trump — along with their respective reputations — it has triggered a “feeding-frenzy” by the media and press. Everyone has a “take” or interpretation of what these appointments will produce in a loyalist point of view approach, an “Ivan the Terrible” group of policy and budget slayers or some combination.

As was reported last week, both of the City of Westminster’s ballot issues went down in defeat. The 0.50 of 1% sales and use tax increase for Fire Department improvements was defeated by a margin of 29,662 votes against and 26,052 votes in support – a 6% spread. On the wards system proposal, the results were wider with 29,646 votes against compared to 24,745 votes in favor, or a 9% spread. There were 1,322 fewer voters weighing in on this issue.

In a press release last week, Council member David DeMott outlined a double announcement looking ahead to the 2025 city election when Mayor Nancy McNally would be up for re-election. The announcement said that she would not be seeking re-election. No reasons were given why she had decided to hang up her political career. In the same announcement, DeMott announced his intent to run for the mayor’s seat a year from now.

There are two ballot issues that are courtesy of our state legislature. One has to do with sports betting revenues and the other would impose a special excise tax on firearms and related supplies. Ballot issue JJ would allow the state to keep sports betting tax revenue above the previously approved amount of $29 million per the voters. Projections show excess revenue to vary from $900,000 to $1.2 million all the way up to $2.5 million over budget years 2023-2024 through 2025-2026.
