If government takes money from your right pocket or left pocket, does it make a difference? I read a story this week about the City of Pocatello losing a grant from the federal government. It was canceled by the Trump White House. This is happening all over the country, and even with some state level grants. Local governments like grants from larger governments because they can hide the cost of projects.

A few years ago, a state legislator told me his niece was paying $1,800 monthly for an 850-square-foot, one-bedroom apartment in Boise. I can extrapolate when I look at my rental increases in Twin Falls and estimate that a one-bedroom apartment could now cost $2,500 a month in Boise. If you want to live in a decent part of town, you’ll pay a premium. Do you think the niece is more concerned about pride flags or rental costs?

Idaho is mineral rich. Ridiculously rich in minerals according to mining engineer Darr Moon. He spoke to Newsradio 96.1 FM and 1310 KLIX and explained he managed to get a letter directly into the hands of President Trump, making a pitch to increase mining in the state (Moon’s wife is state Republican Chairwoman Dorothy Moon). Much of the mining could be accomplished on federal lands that are currently off limits.

A friend remembers it was the only place on Interstate 90 with a stoplight. He served in the Army and was on the road after being transferred to a new post on the West Coast. He was amused when he came across the light. But some in government weren’t. The proposed plan would wipe out much of Wallace to put a non-stop highway through downtown. The townspeople, many of whom had family that rebuilt after one of the biggest wildfires in North American history, objected.

I saw this beast in an Idaho parking lot. Someone must have been picking up some supplies. This is more than an RV. It’s a tank, outfitted with big wheels and an attitude. It says it can go almost anywhere. Planning a fishing trip into the backcountry? This will get you there. It also bespeaks security. That is why when I posted the picture to Facebook, someone commented that if you owned this, you would be ready for the Zombie Apocalypse, which is a catch-all term we use for any catastrophe.

Across much of the country, it’s a straight road. Idaho has a different tale. Route 20 is almost 3,400 miles long. Quite a few miles of that total are in a compact region of the Boise National Forest. The road has some wild gyrations through the mountains. I’m not sure how tourists handle the drive, but locals make some hairpin turns at 65 miles per hour.

There Aren't Many Libs HereThis one looks oxymoronic. It’s at the Walmart in Mountain Home. I dropped in on the store over the weekend to get some batteries for my camera. It was late morning, and the place was packed. As if Walmart would be quiet on a weekend!I checked out the array of electric vehicle chargers, which look pristine. As if nobody has used them. I was at the store for about 20 minutes and saw each station standing silent in the sunlight.

I saw this fellow while shopping yesterday. I was in the store for 20 minutes, and his owner was just ahead of me at the checkout. I’m not sure how long she had been in the store before I got there. A few years ago, at another store in town, I told a guy collecting carts about a dog in a hot car. He glanced at what I was pointing at. “Windows are cracked,” he replied. Here’s an exercise. Sit in your car on a sunny day with the windows cracked and see how quickly you become uncomfortable.

I had a conversation with a survivor. He was an old man in the summer of 2018 when we met. He told me about the many friends he lost that day. He didn’t choke up, but he spoke in a somber tone, as if he were alive to remember them. He explained he was able to get out because he was above the fire. A total of 91 men were killed. The Sunshine Mine Disaster isn't forgotten. The area around Kellogg and Wallace isn’t heavily populated. Disaster is a part of local history.

I hitched a ride one day on the Twin Falls County Sheriff’s Office boat. We encountered people swimming near Pillar Falls. I don’t have that skill in the water, and especially avoid places where the depth is above my chin. Deputies asked the young women if they were okay, and the swimmers replied they were fine. If you don’t have a backyard pool and avoid public pools, where do you swim? The water of the Snake River is a murky mess.
