I wanted to start this column by telling you that I now have two cleaning ladies. Actually, though, it’s three. One of them brings along her mother, who glares at me like the cranky mother-in-law I never had. The daughter was recommended to me by an old friend and is very sweet — although before her first visit she gave me a lengthy list of things she HAD to have in order to properly tidy up my Long Island apartment.

3-minute readBill ErvolinoNorthJersey.comMom looked sad. Clearly, she was having a bad day. I was in high school at the time and arrived home around 4 p.m. She was in the kitchen ironing shirts, with our dachshund on the floor across from her. When I walked in, I saw her and the dog staring at each other. Eventually, she looked at me and said, “I think the dog is my mother.”I looked at my mom’s big sad eyes. I looked at the dog’s big sad eyes. Then, I looked back at Mom.

The holidays are coming! No, not THOSE holidays. I’m referring to the other ones: Mother’s Day is today and Father’s Day is June 15. Other upcoming celebrations of note include Children’s Day on June 8, Grandparents Day on Sept. 7, and Daughters Day on Sept. 25(Sons Day was March 4. If you are a son who didn’t get a card or a gift, you could probably sue for retroactive compensation.)I am not a father and have no children (or grandchildren) of my own. And both of my parents are gone.
