A hidden gem few people know about lies behind Cow Mountain alongside Hwy 20 in Lake County. Blue Lakes is unique in that it is fed deep below the surface by a natural spring. Winter runoff is also a factor, but the water is kept clean and blue, year around by the spring. There was an old bottled water company that serviced the Bay Area for many years, they were based in the East Bay. Five-gallon glass water jugs was the business.

David Gordon does not need a doorbell, his pint size Rat Terrier, Luci, announced my arrival as soon as my feet touched the front deck. At 79, David is a tall, lean drink of water with an engaging smile and manner. He ran hundred-mile marathons in his younger days and still follows an active lifestyle. After a few minutes of getting to know Luci, she was shown the door; she stood sentry on the deck.

If you are a hunter, you may feel the hot breath of a deadline breathing on your neck. Tags for elk, pronghorn, bighorn sheep and premium deer hunts are issued through the big game drawing. Applications for the big game drawing are available each year from April 15th through June 2nd. Not sure if you will be going with family and friends this year or where exactly? You should think long and hard about the big game drawing.

The Redwood Empire Bass Club (RED bass club) held their May meeting on the 7th. Gearing up for the busy summer season was a big part of the meeting. Member Steve Skanderson presented a detailed report on using a ‘Texas’ rig. In the end, an important tool to have in your fishing arsenal. There was discussion about the upcoming Roberts Lake event in Rohnert Park on May 24. The need to make people aware of this valuable club and what it can offer, to mentor fishers, old and young.

It is time to plan for a busy summer. Sometimes ‘busy’ might be snoozing in an inner tube at your favorite swimming hole. Vacations to exotic, far away destinations, like the beautiful Northern California Wine Country. Sipping on your favorite wine while visiting famous wineries in exotic Sonoma Country. Summer is also rockhounding time. Our local club, Santa Rosa Mineral and Gem Society (SRMGS), will be hosting several local collecting sites for members.
