The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) has closed down crab fishing in Monterey Bay. One of the early migratory whales became entangled in a crab trap and suffered. The announcement came with a warning, ‘...this may mean an early closure for crab fishing.’ Jeep trails are trying to dry out, the little rivulets are slowing, and bigger creeks are trying to calm down. Trails in the shady side are still slippery, so carry plenty of mud-rescue gear when you venture out.

A man in a parking lot passed too close to a dog’s car, the window was partly down, the dog bared teeth and barked. The man jumped and hurried off. There are some answers on how you can respond to, avoid, or subdue an aggressive dog. Research online yielded many, many solutions including carrying a large revolver. Not the most practical approach. Here is a scary statistic, every day in the US, about 1,000 people are treated in emergency rooms for dog bites.

Crab fishing has slowed to a crawl, not expected to pick up again until June. You can drop your traps in Tomales Bay (TB) and don’t forget to go for the creepy, crawly bottom feeders. Sting Ray and a good number of Sharks call TB home. If you have never hauled in a Ray or Shark, you are in for a wild ride. Be sure to use a wire leader, normal synthetic and woven leaders will be chewed off. Launch at Nick’s Cove and park your boat trailer across the street.

Talk’n turkey, bearded turkey that is. Turkeys with a beard? Some fun facts about turkey beards. A rough patch of skin (The Papillia) in the middle of the breast, at birth on male turkeys. Some are blessed with more than one Papillia and grow multiple beards. About 10% of hens have beards and may grow a smaller version. This can be an unfortunate event, in that turkey hunting regulations name turkeys with beards are legal to harvest. Biologists say the beard continues to grow longer with age.

At the mouth of Bodega Bay, Doran County Park is one of the busiest ocean side parks on the north coast. The tidal marsh was taken from a nearby rancher, William Doran, during World War II. The Navy wanted to use it as a rescue center for damaged vessels during the war. In the fifties it was little used until it became a county park in 1966. At that time, it was estimated it had 170k visitors a year.
