    Young turkeys are following their mothers; she teaches them to scratch the ground and peck whatever looks good. Mother hen keeps her chicks on a short leash, if one gets too far off, she clucks them to come back into the fold. If the chicks are tardy, she might give them a peck or flap a wing. She is constantly making noise, clucks and growls, popping sounds and soft burbles. When a hen meets up with another hen with chicks, the little ones are quick to join.

    A report from the Napa River zone was a bit less than spectacular over the weekend. One fat striper, young, energetic and feisty was boated. He measured just over the 18-inch minimum to be a keeper. Doug Jung handled the net and measuring. He said the bass was big, for a yearling, and gave several cooking options. The winner was steamed Chinese style with a sauce of sizzling hot oil and dark sesame, poured over the plated fish with a ring of fresh rice.

    Early reports for the special opening of sport-caught salmon are that most who managed to get their boats in the water were blessed with at least some salmon. Last Friday, eastbound 80 towards Sacramento was highlighted by many, many salmon fishing boats heading west. An on the spot-report was that the line to launch a boat in the ocean was an hour or more long on Friday. Salmon season opened Saturday the seventh in the predawn hours.

    Fellow rock-nut, fossil lover, desert digger and metal detectorist Mike Martin of Eureka Gem and Mineral Society sends daily updates from his springtime western desert odyssey. Mike goes to dig in the desert before the blazing summer heat rolls in. Spring can also have hot days and very cold nights which makes for happy rockhounds. Mike met some friends in Nevada two weeks ago, they metal detected an old dumps site near a mining town that was a going concern in its day.

    A hidden gem few people know about lies behind Cow Mountain alongside Hwy 20 in Lake County. Blue Lakes is unique in that it is fed deep below the surface by a natural spring. Winter runoff is also a factor, but the water is kept clean and blue, year around by the spring. There was an old bottled water company that serviced the Bay Area for many years, they were based in the East Bay. Five-gallon glass water jugs was the business.
