Zach Tuohy has decided to retire from footy – big news in Melbourne, and in Laois. The popular Portlaoise-man, who plays Aussie rules with the Geelong Cats in Victoria (along with team-mates Mark O’Connor from Kerry and Oisín Mullin from Mayo) has been getting plenty of mainstream media coverage ahead of his imminent retirement from the AFL. But Tuohy’s Irishness is not the novelty it once was in Australia.

Warm days, cool nights, azure skies that can take your breath away. Last Saturday was one such day: a day so perfect you could convince yourself that nothing could go wrong. By late afternoon, however, the city had been plunged into grief and shock.

On the face of it, the theme for the scattering of Irish politicians around the globe for St Patrick’s Day 2024 is a worthy one. “Ireland’s Future in the World”, we are told, will preoccupy the minds of 38 Ministers as they jet off to 86 cities in 48 countries. The Department of Foreign Affairs press release proclaims that the emissaries will focus on “young Irish people, and our diaspora, and their perspectives about the world of the future and Ireland’s place in it”.
