Panita Thanatharn, an associate head coach at Long Beach State, was named the fourth head coach of the University of Hawaii softball program, acting athletics director Lois Manin announced on Wednesday. Thanatharn replaces Bob Coolen, who coached the Rainbow Wahine for 34 seasons and retired following the 2025 season. I can remember sitting on the living room floor, eyes closed, praying the Seattle SuperSonics didn’t win the 2007 NBA Draft lottery. It’s a weird feeling cheering against your hometown team. I was there in the very top row at the Seattle Center Coliseum as a 9-year-old kid when the Sonics closed out the Utah Jazz in a win-or-go-home Game 5 of a first-round series in 1993. Walking back to the car, I was holding these Sonics- colored pom-poms that I would wave at every car driving by.

Former Hawaii Rainbow Wahine volleyball player Amber Igiede was one of 14 players named to the U.S. Women’s National Team roster on Friday for the opening week of the 2025 Volleyball National League. The team will compete in VNL’s first week of preliminary- round matches Wednesday through June 8 in Rio de Janeiro. Igiede, a third-team AVCA All-America selection in 2022 and ’23, is one of four middle blockers on the team.

Arkansas junior shortstop Wehiwa Aloy doubled and scored in the first inning of the Razorbacks’ 6-2 victory over North Dakota State on Friday in the opener of the NCAA Fayetteville Regional at Baum-Walker Stadium in Fayetteville, Ark. The Baldwin alumnus also drove in a run on a sacrifice fly in the second inning, and younger brother Kuhio Aloy went 1-for-3 with a walk and scored on Cam Kozeal’s two-run homer in the fifth inning against the fourth-seeded Bison (20-33).

The University of Hawaii announced a 29-match schedule with 17 at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center for the 2025 Rainbow Wahine volleyball team on Wednesday. The five-time defending Big West Conference champions, who went 21-10 last season and advanced to the first round of the NCAA Tournament, will play three other returning NCAA teams in the nonconference schedule. UH will open the season with the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic on Aug.
