A drone was recovered near the India-Bangladesh border on Wednesday evening in Assam’s Sribhumi district, police said. Officials said that the drone was spotted on the roof of a residence at Bipin Paul Road of the Chorakuri area in the district on Wednesday. “According to our initial investigation, it looks like this drone has come from the other side of the border,” the superintendent of police (SP), Sribhumi, Partha Pratim Das told HT on Thursday.

Silchar: The Assam University, Silchar (AUS) authorities on Wednesday suspended an assistant professor, who has been absconding since Sunday, following allegations of sexual harassment by three female students. The students filed a police complaint against assistant professor Ajit Kumar Jena on May 4, alleging that he had sexually harassed them over an extended period. Police have registered a case against the professor under relevant sections of Bharatiya Nyay Sanghita (BNS).

Silchar: Two persons were killed in two incidents of elephant attacks within a span of 24 hours near Assam’s Numaligarh town, forest officials said on Sunday. The first incident was reported on Saturday where a local resident named Binod Majhi was killed by a herd of wild elephants, while the second incident happened on Sunday morning where a tea garden guard named Debcharan Nuniya died.

SILCHAR: A 30-year-old man released on bail in an attempted rape case on Tuesday killed the woman who had filed the police complaint for trying to rape a minor in 2023, police said. Police said the suspect, Mukha Basumatary, who was previously in jail for trying to rape a minor girl, was arrested for murder in Assam’s Chirang district on Wednesday morning. Chirang superintendent of police (SP) Akshat Garg said the accused was being interrogated.

Silchar: Three suspected members of banned militant group National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN) have been killed in Assam’s Dima Hasao district during an encounter with police on Tuesday, officials said. According to the police, the suspected militants were trying to extort money from some construction agencies working on a government project.
