Silchar: A seven-year-old girl was allegedly gangraped and murdered by two men in Assam’s Tinsukia district on May 28, police said on Monday, adding that the two prime accused were arrested on May 31 and June 1. The incident happened in a village under the jurisdiction of Bordubi Police Station on May 28 afternoon. The accused threw the girl’s body in a drain before absconding, said the Tinsukia deputy superintendent of police (DSA), Nitisha Jagtap.

Silchar: The Assam Police, in a joint operation with the Assam Rifles and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), have arrested a suspected commander of the banned militant group United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent), or ULFA-I, and recovered some firearms, officials said. The superintendent of police (SP), Tinsukia, Gaurav Abhijit Dilip, said that the self-styled brigadier of ULFA-I, identified as Rupam Asom, was arrested from the Lekhapani area of Tinsukia early on Saturday.

Silchar: A suspected poacher has been killed in Assam’s Kaziranga National Park during a cross-firing between the forest guards and a team of armed miscreants on Wednesday afternoon, officials said. The divisional forest officer (DFO), Eastern Assam Wildlife Division (EAWL), Arun Vignesh, told HT that a group of unknown men were noticed in the Agaratoli Range area of the park on Wednesday morning and a search operation was launched immediately.
