GUWAHATI: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Friday that persons with origins in Bangladesh who have been declared foreign nationals by tribunals in the state are being pushed back to the neighbouring country as per directives of the Supreme Court and the process would continue. “There are two types of intruders. Those who have entered recently or are trying to enter India, and those who have been staying here for many years and have been declared as foreign nationals by tribunals.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday issued red alerts for five north eastern states, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Meghalaya and Manipur. Most parts of northeast India have been witnessing heavy rainfall since Thursday night, which have continued till Friday afternoon, meteorological department officials said. According to the regional Met centre in Guwahati, the downpours are due to a depression over Bangladesh which is slowly moving towards the northeast.

Forest rangers in Assam’s Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve (KNPTR) gunned down a suspected poacher during an encounter on Wednesday night, officials confirmed on Thursday. The deceased, who is yet to be identified, was killed in the Agaratoli range of the park, which is the world’s largest habitat of the endangered one-horned rhinocerous. This is the second such incident in KNPTR this month after another poacher was killed on May 21.

Guwahati: The Assam government will provide arms licence to indigenous people living in “vulnerable and remote” areas, especially those in Muslim-majority districts sharing borders with Bangladesh, for instilling a sense of security in them, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Wednesday. The decision, taken at a state cabinet meeting, will be applicable in districts like Dhubri, Nagaon, Morigaon, Barpeta, South Salmara and Goalpara, Sarma told reporters.
